DIRECTED BY David O Russell
Starring Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington, Robert De Niro, Michael Shannon, Chris Rock, Mike Myers, Anya Taylor-Joy, Rami Malek
I was interested in this film based on the cast and that I like Russell’s films. Movies like Silver lining playbook and The Fighter are both great films.
The story starts in World War I when Burt meets Harold and when they get injured they meet Valerie and the three become friends and move to Amsterdam. Burt and Harold return home, Burt becomes a doctor, and Harold a lawyer. When Harold asks Burt to do an autopsy of a senator they find themselves suddenly blamed for a murder and go trying to clear their names and in the process reunite with Valerie who joins them.
I loved the film, I think it started a bit slow but then it gets more intense and funnier and more interesting. It has a good mystery around the story as they try to figure out who did the murder and Russell is good at mixing crazy funny characters within a drama story. The ending to me was so shockingly moving as it explained what I believe was the main theme in the film, true friendship, found in Burt, Harold, and Valerie.
The movie is a powerhouse in terms of performance. Beginning with the great Christian Bale once again transforms himself into this character and delivers a funny yet moving performance. Margot and John David Washington are perfect alongside Bale and deliver great performances. In supporting roles you get actors like De Niro, Malik, Shannon, and Myers all at their best.
In the end, I have to say I liked the film and loved the performances.
