To make successful films with both critics and audiences with video games materials is a big gamble because most times they just don’t work. Recent ones like Uncharted worked and were fun films, so, some of them work and are good films. The first Sonic film I thought was enjoyable. Let’s see what I thought of the sequel.
The story starts as Sonic is trying to be a superhero but is told by his guardians, Tom and Maddie, to wait until he is ready to be a hero. His guardians take a trip for the wedding of Maddie’s sister. While they are gone Sonic finds out that Robotnik is back and with a new ally as they search for a jewel that will give them power.
When it comes to these kinds of films I try not to focus on the quality of the script because this is not a film that is trying to win an Oscar, the main goal is to entertain, and yes, a good script is important, but the stories usually have the same basis. I thought on that basis it worked because the movie is fun, has a lot of action, and has good comedy also. It does not hurt to have Jim Carrey make a movie funny, just like he did in the first film, he was funny and worked great as a villain. The special effects looked good and the action scenes were good also.
The performances worked for the film. Jim Carrey steals the show once again, but the whole cast did their jobs and all were good and funny. Some characters are made to be so silly to look for easy laughs, those annoyed me a bit, but the rest of the characters were good.
The main thing I can say is that if you liked the first film, you will enjoy this one. It took what worked in the first film and may be enhanced a little with the new characters.
