I was revisiting this film today. I have a love/hate relationship with this film. Superman is among my favorite superheroes so I was excited to see him again on the big screen. I think this film was made with a lot of good intentions that just did not age well.
The story takes place after the first two films, so it is as if Superman 3 and 4 never happened. In this film, we learn that Superman has been gone for a few years and he comes back. Lex Luther steals his crystal and plans to use it to create new land that destroys the ones that already exist.
As I saw it again I admit the same flaws still bother me. I liked that they wanted to honor Reeves and the first films by continuing them somehow. I just think they could have made some things different. The story felt similar to the first one in terms of Lex’s plan. I did not mind that they kept silly Clark, although I think this time around they could have changed that.
The good was the effects. Time has passed and technology now makes it better for the audience in terms of seeing Superman fly and fight. I think Routh was a good choice. I like his version of Superman. Kevin Spacey made Luther more evil than Hackman did in the first two films and that was a good choice.
