I came in expecting a different film. I thought it was more of those films about an investigator of a crime in the neo-noir style. It is still in that style but it was a different film.
The film is about Stanton Carlisle and how he goes from helping around in a carnival to becoming a big act as physic. He becomes friends with Madame Zeena and Pete and they teach him some tricks to make people believe that he is physic and can reach dead people.
I have to say that I was in between seeing it and not seeing it. For me, to like this one-noir film it has to be something good like Chinatown with Jack Nicholson. But I have to say that this movie once I started I could not stop watching it. I was surprised by the story in the sense that it was a thriller not based on an investigator and a crime. It is more about this character and how he descends into greed and crosses a line. It was a suspenseful film because you could feel he was going to get in trouble but the how and when kept me intrigued. I thought it had a great story and interesting characters. It can be considered slow because of the nature of the film but for me, it did not matter because I was invested in the characters and the story and the end has a great plot twist that made it worthy.
The cast was perfect in every way. Bradley Cooper has proven to me that he is a great actor. Here he plays a character that we start liking but end up hating as greed takes over him. the supporting cast is amazing in this movie. starting with the great Willem Dafoe. Toni Collette, Davis Strathairn, and in honesty all the cast make this a great film to see.
Like all movies, some will like it some will not. For me, I enjoyed the story and the performances and I thought I would not, but I ended up enjoying the film once I started it. And the ending just so ironic.
