Directed by Mitja Okorn
Starring Jaden Smith, Cara Delevinge, Nia Long, Cuba Gooding Jr.
This past week a lot has been said about Jaden as a rumor went out that he would be cast to play Miles Morales in a Spider-Man film. I don’t see him in that role but that for another day. Through that discussion, someone mentioned this film.
The story is about Daryn. He has his whole life planned out and is on track until he meets Isabelle and falls in love with her. He then finds out she is sick and decides to make in a year all good moments in life with her.
In terms of the story I have mixed feelings, it has been done before, but at the same time, I understand that stories repeat themselves with little different elements. I won’t hold that against the film. But here is my problem, it felt like a film written to promote Jaden’s career. Not the first time this has been done, 8 Mile was made to make money on Eminem’s fame, all those films with basketball players and musicians. Some work and others don’t. Here the character raps also, a coincidence? I think not. For me and just my opinion, I did not buy the film. It has a nice idea and concept but I just could not get into it.
I have nothing against Jaden and I liked him on Pursuit of Happyness and Karate Kid. Here he had good moments others felt too over the top of that he tried too hard. Cuba is good but the character is the typical father who wants his son to follow his desires. Cara was the one thing I could single out but again, a character that is not unique.
I always encourage people to see the movies and decide for themselves, but if you ask me, I just did not like it that much.
