Sideways (2004)

Directed by Alexander Payne

Starring Paul Giamatti, Thomas Hayden Church, Virginia Madsen, Sandra Oh

Sometimes it is good to revisit a good old movie that you have not seen in a while. This film I saw in 2004 at the theater and I was surprised by the film.

The story is about Miles. He is waiting to find out if his book is getting published and he is taking his friend Jack for a trip before he gets married. Miles has the whole week planned, but Jack just wants to meet women and changes Miles’s plans. They meet Stephanie and Maya and it gets complicated for Miles when he falls for Maya and gets caught in Jack’s lies.

I remember that I went to see this movie because it was getting a lot of nominations that year. And I was surprised at how much I liked it. It has a good story and two good characters. Jack is a despicable character, not likable but yet is hard to keep watching to see how deep he is willing to go. Miles is the heart of the story as he unwillingly has to tolerate his friend while going through his depression. It is a story mainly about friendship and the things we do for friends. There is drama in the story and there are a lot of funny moments.

It was Tomas Hayden Church who gained most of the nominations and praise, but for me, it was Paul Giamatti’s performance that shines in the movie. I loved his take on this character and his performance was right on point. Thomas was also great, I just feel his character was more common as a character, but his performance was very good especially the scene where after all he has done, he pleads for help in recovering his wallet where his wedding rings are. Virginia Madsen is sweet as Maya and Sandra Oh was also good.

This is a good film, it has a good story, crazy situations, and just a good journey to go along with these characters.
