Gremlins (1984)

Directed by Joe Dante

Starring Phoebe Cates, Zach Galligan, Howie Mandel as Gizmo,

Wanting to write about a film from my youth, this one came to my mind because I use to see it a lot. And even today I still enjoy

It.

Randal Peltzer is an investor and one night enters a store where he meets a strange pet called a mogwai. Wanting to buy it for his son’s birthday the owner tells him no because of the care that mogwai requires. The owner’s grandson sells him the mogwai in secret and tells him three instructions: no bright lights, don’t get him wet and no food after midnight. When an accident gets mogwai wet all hell breaks loose.

This film is so entertaining. It has a bit of horror, it’s funny and feels like an adventure film somehow. The gremlins are funny but ugly and some of their attacks left me wondering about that PG rating. The story is simple but effective. The movie has so many cool scenes but none like the gremlins in a movie theater seeing Snow White.

It has a sequel but that one went another direction and it feels more like it wanted to be funny only. But the first film remains among my favorites.
