Directed Craig Brewer
Starring Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, Leslie Jones, Jermain Fowler, Wesley Snipes
The first movie is such a classic film that when I heard that sequel was coming I had my doubts. And when I heard the premise about a son in Queens I was not sure. But it was definitively a movie that I was going to see.
The movie takes place 30 years after the events of the first film. Akeem is now king, still with Lisa and they have three daughters. Akeem’s father is dying and tells Akeem that he has a son in Queens that he must go to because he needed a male heir. So he goes and brings his son to Zamunda.
I want to start by saying that it was good to see Eddie and Arsenio together again and bring back so many of those crazy characters. And the new characters blended well with the characters of the first film. I liked the story, I think they handled the sudden appearance of the son well, it was both funny and believable, it did not feel that forced to make the sequel. I still like the first one better but this one made me laugh and I had a great time seeing it. I still loved the McDowell jokes, and in this one, it got better. I admire this movie because it does not rely on gags to be funny, is all in the story and the characters.
Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall once again made me laugh and were able to repeat what worked in the first movie. Wesley Snipes was funny as Akeem’s foe. Leslie Jones and Tracy Morgan were also funny.
As I said, the first film is still better but it is a good sequel, it has a lot of funny moments and a good story. I think people that liked the first one will enjoy this movie. It is not a perfect movie, but it achieves the main goal of making people laugh and have a good time, I sure did.
