I admit I am a sucker for silly romantic comedies. And this one has a special place in my memory. I saw it at a movie theater and I don’t know why but I always loved it. Not a perfect movie and a lot of cheesy moments, but a nice story.
Iris lives in London and works on a newspaper while helplessly in love with a co-worker named Jasper Bloom. When at a Christmas party they announce that Jasper is engaged she goes home and decides she wants to leave London. While in America, Amanda just breaks up with her boyfriend and also feels the need to take a vacation. So, what they do is a house swap, Amanda stays at Iris’s house in London and Iris goes to Los Angeles. The trip will change both of their lives.
I liked the story a lot, although if I’m honest I like it mainly because of Iris’s storyline. I think it’s more natural and has a lot of charm. The romance between cinema that is introduced to Iris through Eli Wallach’s character is charming. And then I liked the story of Iris and Miles. Amanda and Graham have their good moments, maybe is that I did not like Amanda as much I liked Iris as characters. Like most of these movies, the story is nice enough that I enjoyed it and has good emotional moments. The movie is filled with silly moments like Iris dancing in the house, Amanda not being able to cry, but for me, they were forgivable the nice bits in the story are more for me.
Part of the charm the film has is due in large part to Kate Winslet’s performance. I think Jack Black was also great in the film, providing funny moments and in a different film for him. Jude Law and Cameron Diaz are also good. the whole cast is good and is a large part of what I like about the film.
I think it’s a nice Christmas based film with a nice story and good performances.
