Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)

Directed by Zack Snyder

Starring Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg, Diane Lane, Jeremy Irons, Gal Gadot

I am excited about the premiere of Wonder Woman on Christmas Day 2020. I decided to revisit the first film where I saw the character appear on film. I wrote a little bit about the DC universe, but I wanted to write in more detail about this one since I saw it again.

The story starts as Bruce Wayne sees the distractions caused by Superman as he fought General Zod. This caused Bruce Wayne to hate Superman and feel that he had to kill him. Meanwhile, Superman’s image is being put to the test as he is seen as causing too many deaths and destruction. As Luther plans to ruin Superman by making him fight the Dark Knight.

I saw the special edition today and found myself glued to it even though it lasted way over 2:30 hours. The movie has its flaws but it does have a lot of good things in it. I will start with the story idea, Luther manipulating everything so that the world hates Superman. The dark in the story is unique for comic book movies and I liked that. The way this film tackles Superman fighting his goodness, thankfully they stayed true to the character and had him try to reason with Batman first instead of making him just fight in anger. I liked that Alfred was actively involved in helping Batman. The battle against Doomsday was great and seeing the three heroes together was great too. The whole funeral for Superman ending was done well.

Now the bad, I did not like Lex Luther and how he was portrayed. Not that Jesse is a bad actor, but I felt like Luther should have been portrayed differently. I can think of how Luther was portrayed in the Louis and Clark tv series by John Shea, he was evil but yet charming as to fool everyone. I know here the angle was different but still. Another thing the battle between Superman and Batman might have been the main promotional thing about the film, but it was the last thing I liked. They did it smartly with how they tied it with Man of Steel, and I see how it tied to Justice League, but it did not feel epic or even necessary.

I think I said this in the other blog post I posted, the DC films are not all bad, they have good things. I enjoyed it today and can’t wait for Wonder Woman tomorrow.
