The Ilusionist (2006)

Directed by Neil Burger

Starring Edward Norton, Paul Giamatti, Jessica Biel, Rufus Sewell

I had not seen this film in a long time and when I saw it was free on Redbox I jumped on the chance to see it again. I remember seeing this movie in a cinema they had right where I worked and I loved it.

The story begins with a young Eisenhein and Sophie as they meet and fall in love. But he was the son of a cabinet maker and she was the duchess and they were not allowed to see each other. Years later he returns as a magician to do shows and they meet again. She is expected to marry the crown prince Leopold who is bad to women and rumored to have killed one.

That is just the premise I think for this movie the less you know the better. I love this movie, the style of the film, the magic, and the suspense. You know he is planning something but how he will do it kept me glued to the film. The story is simple but it works.

Edward Norton is an overlooked actor, in my opinion, he should have won for American History X. Here he is great once again. I think he is one of the best actors around. I loved Norton and also Paul Giamatti’s performance. I think they were both at their best in this film.

It is a good mystery film where we are being played with what we are seeing but I did not mind and loved finding out at the end how he did it.
