Directed by Marco Brambilla
Starring Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Sandra Bullock
When it comes to action films of my era, this film is one that I have always enjoyed from the first moment I saw the film. I remember owning the VHS, yes, the VHS of the movie.
The film begins as John Spartan goes after ruthless criminal Simon Phoenix. As the battle, John can capture Phoenix but when the building explodes they find out a group of hostages were there. For that John is charged with involuntary manslaughter and is sentenced to 70 years frozen. When Phoenix is somehow set free from cry-prison in the year 2032, to capture him John Spartan is set free to go after Simon Phoenix.
This has to be among my favorite action films of all time. I think the movie has a good mix of everything. The action scenes are good and the movie has a lot of that. It has a good story and a lot of fun moments. The characters, especially Phoenix, are fun to watch. The interactions with the barbaric Spartan with the new ways of the 2032’s are funny.
This is Wesley Snipes’s film in all honesty. Just like Antonio Banderas did in Assassins, Snipes steals the show. Giving the character the psychotic factor and yet can make you laugh with his antics. Stallone does his job as well and handles the comedy and the action with his usual great ability. This is Sandra Bullock’s first film and she is great as the naive Lenina Huxley, a woman obsessed with the 1990s, Spartan’s era.
The passage of time has not made this film out of time and it is still a fun movie to see. I just saw t today and I admit I enjoyed it so much. I always say with these films don’t look for a masterpiece just take them as they are and enjoy it. But I think this one is good.
