Directed by Ben Wheatley
Starring Lily James, Armie Hammer, Kirsten Scott Thomas
I have become a fan of Lily James. I liked her in Mamma Mia and Yesterday.
The story is about this girl who serves as a caretaker or ward to a wealthy woman. While staying in the hotel she meets Maxim de Winter, a wealthy widower. They developed a friendship and starts spending time together. When she has to leave he asks her to marry him. She has to live in the shadow of Rebeca, his former wife.
I had different ideas of what this film was going to be like and they were all wrong. I thought it would turn into a ghost story somehow, I can’t say why. I have to say it was a good thriller. The way Rebeca is mentioned but we never get any detail of who she was or what happened keeps you trying to guess as to who was the real villain in the story. I don’t want to say much because this is a movie that you will either like or don’t like, but it is best to see it without knowing much. I do think the direction the film takes can keep the audience glued to the movie just to find what happened to Rebeca.
As I said, I like Lily James and I think she gives a good performance. She has to portray an insecure character who is going against what it seemed like the perfect woman and trying to live up to her. She does that perfectly as the character goes from innocent and sweet to a stronger character by the end of the movie. The other highlight for me in terms of performance was Kirsten Scott Thomas as the main caretaker of the house.
Available on Netflix, I think os worth seeing, it is interesting and suspenseful even if it has a few predictable moments.
