Brokeback Mountain (2005)

Directed by Ang Lee

Starring Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, Michelle Williams

This film was mentioned in the series about movies that I was watching last week and I wanted to see it again. Honestly, I wanted to see it with more maturity and really get into the story.

The film is about Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist, they meet on a job herding sheep for a summer. They develop in time a bond and a love for each other. At the end of the job, they both go their ways. Ennis marries Alma and has a family and Jack meets Lureen and also has a family. After a few years, they see each other again and once in a while, they went on fishing trips together. Ennis is scared of what others might do or say if they are discovered and that is why he never makes a life with Jack as he wanted.

Seeing now I really appreciated the story so much more. I like how we see the contrast between these two characters who are basically going through the same thing in terms of living lives to cover what they really wanted. Ennis struggles in his life and in finding work and Alma discovers what they were really doing. Jack worked for his father in law and had money, his marriage was not perfect but still, he had it better than Ennis in that sense. It is a love story and a story about human beings and how we struggle with love and other emotions. The film is made in a way that as an audience we can feel what every character goes through.

Heath Ledger is amazing in this movie. Before he amazed us with The Joker, he gave this touching and moving performance. He really gave to this complex and guarded character and he went all for it without fear or restriction. Jake Gyllenhaal was also great in the film. I have always liked him as an actor. Heath and Jake were both great in the film. The women did not stay behind, special Michelle Williams who played Ennis’s wife.

I don’t know if the film lost the Oscar because it was about a gay couple, I do believe this film is better than Crash that did end up winning.
