Downhill (2020)

Directed by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash

Starring Will Ferrell and Julia Louis- Dreyfus

This film is a remake of Force Majeure a film by a Swedish director. Based on some of the reviews I read, the original was better, like most cases. For me, since I did not see the original I can’t judge if this film is better or as good as the original. I just read what the premise of the film was and I found it interesting.

The Stanton family arrives at the Alps on a vacation. When the family is at dinner an Avalanche and Pete picks up his phone and runs leaving the family behind. That causes the couple to re-evaluate their relationship.

What can I say about this film? I think it had a good premise and a good story that deserved maybe a longer running time and a deeper story. From the beginning of the film, Pete seemed like a troubled character and his actions could have been a result of something deeper. Billie also was a character that deserved a better resolution by the end of the film and not just give a her a day out and all the typical temptations for a married couple. It is not, by all means, a bad movie, it is a charming story about the truth of life and marriage and how times can change affect us. I think I would have wanted to see the characters end in a different place, the ending just left things in an ambivalent way.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus was really good in the movie, she was funny and moving and really made me feel her pain at the fact that Pete ran to safety and left them there. Will Ferrell achieved in a lot of the film to go away from his big persona and the characters he is used to playing. I am not saying that he achieved it at the same level as Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but Will here was more of a low energy character and only in one scene where the character was drunk that it felt like the usual Will Ferrell. Both actors did a good job with their characters and allowed the audience to understand the characters in some ways.

I can’t say to everyone that reads this to go and see it, I really can’t. It is one of those movies where a lot might not like it and a few will like it. I saw it and I liked the story but felt the movie could have been better. I might try to see the original to see if the differences make it a better film.
