Parasite (2019)

Directed by Bong Joon-ho

Starring Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-Kyun, Cho Yeo-Jeong, Choi Woo-Shik

The movie swept the Oscars and made history by winning both Best International Film and Best Picture. This is a must-see film regardless of whether you think it should have won or not. I say that because though I agree with it winning the International film, I am torn with it winning Best Picture and I will explain later.

The Kim is a family that lived in a small place and could barely make ends meet. The son, Ki-woo, takes over for a friend as a tutor for a wealthy family and the rest of the family slowly infiltrates every job in the family. They framed the driver so he gets fired, the father becomes the driver, the daughter poses as an art therapist and the mother enters as a housekeeper. Trouble comes when the family leaves for the weekend and they all stay in the house and enjoy the rich life only to discover other people also were taking advantage of the rich family.

That is just a brief discussion of what the story is, there is a lot to be taken from this film. as I was watching the film I thought about the song from Poison called Something to believe in where in a line he describes how in one corner the rich drank from golden cups and the poor from the hands. It is a hard film to see because I really did not like the Kim family and what they were doing. I understood it, but the Park family were the typical rich characters, but I did not find them mean, to have these people do all this even affecting their son who thought he saw ghosts.

The film is truly a great film and I think any movie fan should see it, the performances are so real and effective. The whole cast brought to life what the characters were going through. The ending is so shocking and sad that I was left with this frustrating feeling about the unfairness of life. It is a hard look at society and it is will stand as a great film for a long time.

When I said I was torn with it winning both Best Picture and Best International picture is mainly because this year had so many good films and they could have won the international award and another the Best Picture, but it was indeed deserving of it.
