Heartburn (1986)

Directed by Mike Nichols

Starring Jack Nicholson, Meryl Streep, Stockard Canning, Jeff Daniels

I really don’t know why this movie is so tied in my memory, but it is. This is one of those examples of things I heard or movies I saw with artist unknown to me at the time that now I consider the best and favorites.

A little history before going into the film. The film is a semi-biographical movie based on Norah Ephron and Carl Bernstein. Nora is now known for films like Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve got mail and When Harry met Sally among other films. Carl Bernstein was known for being one of the journalists that discovered the Watergate scandal. The movie is based on their marriage that was broken by Carl’s various affairs.

I seem to remember this film and seeing it at home one day on HBO and since then I remember the movie fondly. I don’t think the movie is that great. It was meant to be funny and it was not and I guess it just dragged the story without really being that interesting. But having said that, I saw it i on Prime and watched some scenes from the film again. I am very sensitive to music and in the end, they played a song that got stuck in my memory. This has happened to me a lot, I can give another example in People Get ready by Rod Stewart and Jeff Beck, the guitar solos and the video left an imprint in me I always get emotional seeing that video and get transported to that time of my life. Anyway, Carly Simon wrote a song Coming Round Again for the movie and included a refrain with the Itsy Bitzy Spider and I can’t say why but I liked it and to this day I admit I do.

The movie has great performances by Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson, but I fear that the only good thing the movie has. But still, a movie that brings me good memories.
