My Oscar Picks

The Oscars are coming on February 9th and this year is one that first time I don’t have clear favorites because of so many good films and performances. I will share my picks of the one I would like to see win, not necessarily the favorites.

Performance by an actor in a leading role nominees:

Antonio Banderas in PAIN AND GLORY

Leonardo DiCaprio in ONCE UPON A TIME…IN HOLLYWOOD

Adam Driver in MARRIAGE STORY

Joaquin Phoenix in JOKER

Jonathan Pryce in THE TWO POPES

I loved two of the performances nominated. Adam Driver was so good in Marriage Story, he was heartbreaking in the film. But the Oscar should go to Joaquin Phoenix, his performance is simply breathtaking and he disappeared in the role and just captivated the audience.

Performance by an actor in a supporting role nominees:

Tom Hanks in A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Anthony Hopkins in THE TWO POPES

Al Pacino in THE IRISHMAN

Joe Pesci in THE IRISHMAN

Brad Pitt in ONCE UPON A TIME…IN HOLLYWOOD

This is the hardest category for me, they were all great, but especially Tom hanks, Joe Pesci, Al Pacino and Brad Pitt. Brad Pitt has been winning in this category in all the awards shows so far so it would not surprise me that he wins. Although I loved Pitt’s performance and don’t mind if he wins, I think Al Pacino deserves it, he was epic as Jimmy Hoffa and he deserves more than one Oscar. So, I’m picking Pacino knowing Brad Pitt will win.

Performance by an actress in a leading role nominees:

Cynthia Erivo in HARRIET

Scarlett Johansson in MARRIAGE STORY

Saoirse Ronan in LITTLE WOMEN

Charlize Theron in BOMBSHELL

Renée Zellweger in JUDY

I have not seen all the performances, but I believe Renée Zellweger will win and since this award is for the performance not the movie itself, I understand she deserves it, she was really good in the movie. I would like for Scarlett Johansson to win because Like Adam, she was great in Marriage Story.

Performance by an actress in a supporting role nominees:

Kathy Bates in RICHARD JEWELL

Laura Dern in MARRIAGE STORY

Scarlett Johansson in JOJO RABBIT

Florence Pugh in LITTLE WOMEN

Margot Robbie in BOMBSHELL

My pick is Laura Dern for her performance in Marriage Story, I loved the scene in the courtroom as she and Ray Liotta battle for their clients.

Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original song) nominees:

“I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away” from TOY STORY 4

Music and Lyric by Randy Newman

“(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from ROCKETMAN

Music by Elton John

Lyric by Bernie Taupin

“I’m Standing With You” from BREAKTHROUGH

Music and Lyric by Diane Warren

“Into The Unknown” from FROZEN II

Music and Lyric by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez

“Stand Up” from HARRIET

Music and Lyric by Joshuah Brian Campbell and Cynthia Erivo

I believe this will be a second Oscar for Elton John and first for Bernie Taupin.

Best motion picture of the year nominees:

FORD V FERRARI

Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping and James Mangold, Producers

THE IRISHMAN

Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Producers

JOJO RABBIT

Carthew Neal, Taika Waititi and Chelsea Winstanley, Producers

JOKER

Todd Phillips, Bradley Cooper and Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Producers

LITTLE WOMEN

Amy Pascal, Producer

MARRIAGE STORY

Noah Baumbach and David Heyman, Producers

1917

Sam Mendes, Pippa Harris, Jayne-Ann Tenggren and Callum McDougall, Producers

ONCE UPON A TIME…IN HOLLYWOOD

David Heyman, Shannon McIntosh and Quentin Tarantino, Producers

PARASITE

Kwak Sin Ae and Bong Joon Ho, Producers

This is one category where the Academy likes to surprise and I see two possible winners in Parasite and 1917, I have not seen those two but I have heard they are good specially 1917. I have two favorites in this category and those are The Irishman and Once upon a time in Hollywood. My pick is The Irishman.
