Elvis: live at the International Hotel Las Vegas Nevada

“I was missing the contact with a live audience” said Elvis when asked why he was returning to live performances after a decade almost of concentrating in making films. He grew tired and frustrated with the movies and decided to go back at what he does best, and that is performing, not that he was bad in the movies because I enjoyed a few of them. He had a four-week engagement in Las Vegas and they are being released on 11 cd’s box set and the vinyl containing one show, the one recorded on August 26, 1969.

I will be talking about the vinyl version, because that is the one I purchased, I imagine the box set is worth it especially if you are an Elvis fan. I have heard many live albums from Elvis, this one felt unique in some sense, I think it was because it was a complete show, and in this performance, Elvis was energetic and charismatic and at his best.

The first side of the vinyl is filled with many of his first hits, starting with Blue Suede Shoes, I got a woman, All shook up, Jailhouse Rock, Don’t be cruel, Heartbreak Hotel and Hound Dog. Elvis really appeared to be having fun and full of energy. The second side has something really interesting, after two songs there is a monologue of Elvis describing his career, he was funny and really showed the charisma that made him a great performance. The audience was really into everything, laughing along with Elvis.

The second vinyl has great performances of songs like Yesterday, Hey Jude, In the Ghetto, Suspicious Minds and Can’t help falling in love. Because I had other live albums of Elvis I was hesitant to buy this one, and now my only regret is not purchasing the 11 shows because even if some songs are repeated it would have been interesting to hear Elvis performances.
