May the 4th be with you!

Until today I thought this was a day where Star Wars is celebrated because it was it was released on 1977, but today I found out that the reason is that it sounds like the phrase “may the force be with you”, instead of force the fourth (Wikipedia, 2019). So, I want to join the celebration talking about films.

The first Star Wars was a huge success and I think it was a surprise even to those involved in the film, especially George Lucas who created the story. But the film really impacted the industry with its story and at that time, great special effects. In that regard I still prefer the original trilogy than the later films in spite of obviously having more technology for the effects. It has been more than 40 years since its original release and still remains as one of the most loved and successful franchises. Of course, it has not been a perfect franchise, but the good things are more than the bad ones.

For me, I grew up with Star Wars, I probably did not see them in the theater, but did see it a lot on video with my sister. I saw them at a movie theater when they were re-released. I think the success of the film lied in the imaginative settings, the characters both human and alien, and the story was simple but good. The franchise can be divided in three parts, the original trilogy, the prequels, and the sequel trilogy. In all honesty, there are films that I did not like, overall, I think they are good films with a good story.

The original trilogy is still for me the best films of the franchise. Empire Strikes Back being the best in the series. Empire had so many moments that were absolutely memorable and of course, the big plot twist of the story was revealed. It is also one of the few movies where the heroes lose and that made it unique. Return of the Jedi was a fitting conclusion to the story, and the final battle between Luke and Darth Vader was so good, and then the with the Emperor. A mistake made with that trilogy, are the changes Luca’s made with some scenes and special effects.

In 1999 George Lucas started to work on the stories that came before the original trilogy. This was exciting at the time and there was a lot of expectation for the films. They were hugely successful, but these films were really just not perfect. The Phantom Menace came first, and I really loved it, it just had one major flaw and it was Jar Jar Binks, yes, he is universally hated, for me, he was just too annoying and maybe trying to be like C-3PO but did not work. The Phantom Menace for me worked because of Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor, they worked well together. The effects really looked amazing and the light-saber fight at the end was really great. The first film in this new trilogy was good. Then came Attack of the Clones, this for me is the worse one, and for the first time I did not like since the first time I saw it. It has the worst dialog and its really boring in my opinion. I liked Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker, but the script was not the best for this one. The best one for me was Revenge of the Sith. The real epic moment came at the end where Obi-Wan and Anakin fight in an intense battle. I liked the way that Anakin was turned, the Emperor was really greatly portrayed by Ian MacDiarmid.

Star Wars also found success in video games. For me, the best games are still the ones released on the Super Nintendo, the original trilogy made in a game. To this day I still love those games. They were visually so great for the times. Over the years Star Wars have been present on the gaming world, I enjoyed The Force Unleashed of all the new games released in recent years. The franchise also found success on the cartoon series Attack of the clones, Rebels and, Resistance. I always have wanted to see it but I have not yet.

And finally, we arrive at the Disney years. The Force Awakens was exciting to see just because we got to see Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher as their iconic roles of Han Solo and Princess Leia. But upon seeing it again I realized it was almost a copy of the first one. The Last Jedi was a good film although I did not like how they used Luke in the story. Rise of Skywalker was the best of the three for me, it was a fan pleasing film in many ways but it did the best it could. I liked the action and the story and the last confrontation between Palpatine and Rey. Of all these new films, Rouge One is the best one still having seen all them now.

I recently started seeing the Clone Wars cartoon and I like the show and the stories but to me it added inconsistencies with Revenge of the Sith. But it is a good show.

This is franchise that is far from perfect but none are, and the impact they have is undeniable. It is a cultural phenomenon that has lasted for over 40 years and I think will always be, because new generations keep seeing both the new films and the originals, and the cartoons.

  1. I agree with you. First, the original trilogy is the best of all. The actors, the action sequences, the Special effects foto the years they were made. Then, that George Lucas do not chance anything un that movies. Probably, a mistake. And finally, the pre-quels and the other trilogy I don’t think of them they’re a must be seen but only for new generations of fans. The Rogue one is may be the best. And two more things: Jar jar binks stinks and next time talk about Solo story and the last movie upcoming. Thanks for your story, I enjoy ir the most. Be the Force of God be with you !
