The Departed (2006)

The Departed (2006)

Directed by Martin Scorsese

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Vera Farmiga, Martin Sheen

This is a truly remarkable film and what a great cast. Yet, I don’t think it was a the best picture of those that were nominated. I think Little Miss Sunshine was a better film. But it did win for Best Picture and finally a Best Director Oscar for Scorsese.

The movie is both sides of a coin, we have a corrupt cop infiltrated in the FBI and an FBI undercover agent in a crime organization led by Frank Costello. Sullivan gets recruited as a kid by Costello, he basically took care of him, payed for his education, in order for him to become a top cop and help him to avoid arrests or being captured. On the other side, Costigan passes the police academy and based on his background, he is recruited by the FBI to go undercover. Only two knew of Costigan, and that kept him safe from Sullivan who then became in charge in finding himself, he was supposed to find the rat within the division. We see how this affects Costigan as he goes to a counselor assigned to him, who at the same time is going out with Sullivan. The last part of the film is so intense until the final moment.

This movie in my opinion is the Academy feeling like they had to give the Oscar to Scorsese, he should have won it many times before for films like Ranging Bull, The Wolf of Wall Street or Goodfellas. He has made better films than this one, but this is what the Academy does, they know of actors or directors that deserved one a long time ago, and give them the award for a role or film that it is not as great. I make this point only to say that Scorsese deserved this award years ago, but The Departed it’s still one good film that will keep you in suspense, I remember leaving the theater feeling like DiCaprio’s character, tense and anxious.

The best part of the film is the cast, starting with Leo, he really makes you feel the desperation of the character and delivers another great performance. The legend Jack Nicholson is really entertaining in this movie, and shows once again the reason why he is considered one of the best actors ever. Matt Damon achieved his goal, I hated the character, his performance was right on point. The rest of the cast was also great, but when you have Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin, Mark Wahlberg and for me I have not seen her before, but Vera Farmiga was also great in the film.
