Birdman 2014

Birdman (The unexpected virtue of ignorance) 2014

Directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu

Starring Michael Keaton, Edward Norton, Emma Stone and Naomi Watts

This movie marked a big comeback for Michael Keaton, and I will always believe he deserved the Oscar for Best Actor. The movie earned nominations for Keaton for Best Actor, Emma Stone and Edward Norton for their supportive roles. Winning 4 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay.

The movies follow Riggan Thompson as he tries to regain the former glory of his acting career by writing, directing a starring in a Broadway play. He was known for playing a superhero in a film trilogy in the 90’s, named Birdman. He is haunted by that character Birdman in his mind as he to organize the play. Birdman is basically telling Thompson to go back to making those films and stop trying to make the play work. He is also dealing with his daughter who is recovering from drug addiction, he has her working as his assistance. We can see Thompson struggle to be taken serious by the press, even by his own actors.

For me what made this film special was Keaton’s performance. He carried the whole film, he gave a truly great performance. There are similarities between him and the character. Keaton was a big star in the ’80s and 90’s making films like Beetlejuice, Mr. Mom, Gung Ho, and of course, Batman and Batman Returns. After Batman, he continued to make films but they were not met we the usual success as his previous work. So, this presented a comeback of some kind and earned him an Oscar nomination. I saw Eddie Redmayne and it was a good performance, but I feel Keaton’s performance had more depth and complexity, not only physicaly but mentally. When Keaton met the director, he asked if the film was making fun of him because of the Batman thing, and the director explained the movie and Keaton agreed to do. the film (Wikipedia, 2019).

Emma Stone also gave a great performance, one of my favorite scenes from the movie is the scene where she is having a discussion with her father. Both actors made that scene so unbelievable. Also giving a great performance is the great Edward Norton, but from his is expected, he is one gifted actor.
